Ashley VanGemeren is a fine artist and handpoke tattoo artist from Central Maryland. She knew she wanted to be an artist from an early age, developing a love for portraiture and acrylic painting in high school. She followed her dream by attending the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design earning her BFA in Fine Art in 2015. During her time at the Corcoran, Ashley became passionate about working with collage and abstraction. She started layering acrylic paint with found objects and unconventional materials to create pieces that were complex, visceral, and deeply personal. It was during this time of exploration she realized art making could be therapeutic, serving as a means to heal and connect with others who have struggled with mental illness and eating disorders. Her portfolio has expanded to include portraits, collage, and wearable art- utilizing color and gestural brushwork to render the essence and celestial nature of her subjects.
Ashley is a nationally exhibited artist, represented by Unruly Collective in Brooklyn since 2017. In addition to her studio practice, she is a self-taught and community-taught handpoke tattoo artist. She's been tattooing from her private studio since July 2023.
